In the beginning, Cameron Montenegro acquires a magical bracelet that allows him to travel to different dimensions, whenever and wherever it chooses. He was given the bracelet, called the ring, by Once Pumpernickel, a man from another dimension who wielded the ring before Cameron. The ring chooses who its “master” is, and while it usually changes hands at one’s death, a ring master can also lose their title by using the ring for selfish and damaging means. This happened to Once, and he’s been trying to find the next ring master ever since in hopes of someday returning home.
